When is the Right Time to Invest in a Garden Room?

You may have noticed the increasing popularity of garden rooms, perhaps you’ve seen them online, Pinterest, instagram? Perhaps you know someone with one? Garden rooms became ever popular during lockdown when people needed a break from their homes and couldn’t go to the pub, the garden bar or pub was the “in thing”; with many of our neighbours being under the eye of jealousy during this time. However, garden rooms didn’t decrease in popularity once lockdown was over with people really understanding their worth and what they add to your home.

So when is the right time to invest in a garden room? There’s a few questions you could ask yourself, what is the purpose for the garden room? Does it have one yet? Or do you really just want some extra space? Are you thinking about extending your home? A garden room could be the better option here, garden rooms should be looked at as an extension of your home, they offer exactly the same thing, if not more. If you think of a garden room as a glorified shed then you will think a garden room is ‘expensive’ but if you realise it’s worth then you will realise it offers so much more and will even add value to your property.

Now, why a garden room over a house extension? Garden rooms can be significantly more appealing when you consider just a few reasons! One being the time in which the garden room can be installed, if you’re a little impatient and would like that extra space ‘now’ then this can be your answer, most garden rooms are installed within 2-3 weeks. The installation also doesn’t require you to move out of your home, you haven’t got to make yourself scarce to get out of the way of the mess and the workers way; you don’t lose access to any of your home whilst the works are taking place. Another reason I feel the garden room outweighs the extension, is the distance from the house itself. Now, this would depend what you intend to use it for, obviously not ideal for a kitchen extension, but if you are planning for an office, a gym, a quiet space or even a loud space - perhaps you want to give the teen/teenagers a space of their own to hang out with friends or watch films and create a cinema room? Or even for yourselves? A party space? An ‘at home pub’ or a garden bar? Then having a room that’s separate from the house is the most ideal thing you have come across today! Garden rooms fit the bill for many purposes, they can come with electrics, heating, surround sound music / cinema systems, double glazed, bifold doors, insulated and plasterboarded so this really can either tie in with your home design or you can go completely crazy and design it completely differently to your home, another great point, the design of your garden room does not need to coordinate or match the design of your house; like a house extension would. You can be as inventive and as creative as you like.

Then the dreaded “planning permission” - nobody likes dealing with the rules and regs of planning permission with most extensions requiring it, along with council checks and architectural drawings. If you fit within most criteria for a garden room, they do not require planning permission, saving a lot of time, money and effort.

Maybe you are looking to sell your property? Garden rooms have been shown to increase property value and also increase desirability, making your home more ‘sellable’ - do you need to create a wow factor to your home? Without the faff of a full extension. This is where the garden room becomes an investment to you.

Garden rooms are ever growing in popularity for all of the reasons I have mentioned above, but this is your space, your design, your home. What can you do with the extra space?
